"Skyline Icon" & The Next Generation
Tonight Skyline Church hosted its first (and I hope not its last) "Skyline Icon." It was a talent competition, a take-off of American Idol.
There were eight finalists - ranging in age from 15 to 24. They were exceptional! It was a fabulous evening! Clay gave us incredible leadership. Nick's videos were totally professional. Rachel's (only 16 years of age) emceeing was unbelievable. Brian keep the audio and tracs humming behind the scene. (And there were no "put-downs" from a Simon-type.)
And then there were the eight finalists. From their opening, well choreographed song together, through the video cameos, to the solos, it was one spectacular evening of entertainment and talent.
Some of them really rocked! Others went for the ballad type sound. Some - a little country. Another tried a Mariah Carey song - and sounded every bit as good. One went for the classic "His Eye is On The Sparrow" and had the crowd spellbound.
I sat there praising God for eight phenomenally talented youth and young adults. I cannot tell you how proud I was. The "show" far exceeded my already high expectations. The talent was captivating. Their passion for Christ was superbly evident.
But most of all - it encouraged me. I saw the church of today - but the leaders of the next generation. And in the years ahead - when it will be time for my generation to step aside from our visible roles - it will be a joy to see people like these eight "taking the helm" and leading us all. I had a glimpse of the future - and I liked what I saw.
